president’s Message – year end 2014

It has been yet another wonderful year in the life of River Spirit.  We have shown our dedication to our team’s mandate at every turn and have proven to our community that we are a force to be reckoned with as a group who cares about ways to support cancer research and public awareness.

We have showed time and time again that we are a team people are drawn to.  We continue to represent our community in the many festivals like Nanaimo and have shown our “spirit” at every turn.  From Super Heroes to Super Paddlers in the Victoria Dragon boat festival’s Platinum Division, we have demonstrated to everyone that we have arrived and that we “belong”.

Next paddling season will bring many new challenges for our members and I am sure that the team as a whole will support each and every one of our “sistahs” as they embark on their personal paddling journeys.

Always remember that although we want to be involved in everything “River Spirit”, life is so much more that being a part of this fabulous group of women.  Do what you can do and participate in what you are able to participate in. This is the most important thing. The best interests of this team lie in the health and well being of its members.  If we deny ourselves balance, we are doing our team, our families and ourselves a great disservice.  Embrace life and all that it has to offer, both on and off the water.

From our River they say she is leaving. We will miss her bright eyes and sweet smile.  We hope she’s not taking the sunshine that has brightened our pathways a while.  Always cheerful; never shirks a task; splendid paddler. All of River Spirit will miss you Denise.

race the river

June 28thRiver Spirit & BraveHearts hosted  Campbell River’s fourth annual Race the River dragon boat regatta. Nineteen teams took part. Although rain was forecast, it turned out to be a mostly sunny day, but very windy. A huge thanks goes to the dock and marshalling crews who worked hard to keep all the races on schedule. In the final race River Spirit were narrowly beaten by Chix with Stix from Nanaimo.

Raising Breast Cancer Awareness in Campbell River

2014 is River Spirit’s eleventh anniversary and raising the public’s awareness of breast cancer remains our top goal.
We encourage athletic excellence amongst our members through paddling and participating in dragon boat races. From early Spring until Fall we practice two or three times a week out of the Fresh Water Marina in Campbell River, and we compete in all the major dragon boat events on Vancouver Island. We paddle seriously, but we do our best to keep it all good fun. Above all else, we believe in keeping a spirit of camaraderie and solidarity alive between our paddlers.
