River Spirit

A picture says it all. Mo and Liz enjoying a cool one in the beer garden after winning a Silver medal at the 2016 Nanaimo Dragon Boat Festival.

Getting into the Final meant the team had to win its first race on Sunday and this didn’t look like it would be easy. Saturday’s race results showed that two of the teams had previous times five and ten seconds faster than River Spirit’s.

Luck often plays a part at dragon boat festivals. For Race #1 on Sunday River Spirit had drawn one of the early heats. This meant the water in the Nanaimo Harbour would still be relatively calm. On Saturday, River Spirit had had to race later in the day when a high crosswind was slowing all the teams considerably. River Spirit won their first race on Sunday and moved on to the Finals with a time twenty seconds faster than Saturday’s best. Susan said it felt like the best race she had ever paddled. It must have been the good teamwork.

Comox Nautical Days 2017

2018 is River Spirit’s fifteenth anniversary and raising the public’s awareness of breast cancer remains our top goal. We encourage athletic excellence amongst our members through paddling and participating in dragon boat races. From early Spring until Fall we practice two or three times a week out of the Fresh Water Marina in Campbell River, and we compete in all the major dragon boat events on Vancouver Island. We paddle seriously, but we do our best to keep it all good fun. Above all else, we believe in keeping a spirit of camaraderie and solidarity alive between our paddlers.
